NAR's REALTOR® Party Political Survival Initiative ProposalBy: Irene L Vogel, GLVAR Chief Executive Officer , 3/30/2011
In case you are not aware, earlier this month, NAR announced the REALTOR® Party Political Survival Initiative proposal. The proposal is for a dedicated NAR dues increase of $40 that would take effect in 2012 and 2013. These additional dues would be used exclusively to fund NAR's political advocacy efforts. NAR created the initiative because of the January 2010 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the case of Citizens United vs. The Federal Election Commission. The rule states that corporate dollars can be used to fund independent expenditure campaigns. (Click here for and Overview and Analysis of the case)
NAR contends that in order to have the impact it has had for the past 100 years in terms of political advocacy, this initiative is imperative.
We were informed by NAR leaders that two-thirds of all the dollars collected as part of this proposed initiative will be available to state and local boards to help them support local candidates and issue campaigns and other political advocacy needs. At this time, we are unclear as to how the money will be allocated to the local and state boards. As soon as our questions are answered, we will let you know.
Please be advised that this initiative is not final. The proposal will be voted on at the May 14 NAR Board of Directors meeting being held during the mid-year legislative meetings in Washington, D.C.
We encourage you to please visit NAR’s REALTOR® Party Political Survival Initiative webpage and take the time to read about this initiative. NAR created this page to provide members with the latest information on this topic and to give them an opportunity to share comments with NAR.
Your GLVAR leadership team also would like to hear from you. We want to make you aware of this proposed initiative and offer a way for you to let your GLVAR leadership know what you think. After reviewing all the information, please use the comments section on this page to give us your feedback.
