VOX POPULIBy: Joe Brezny, Deputy Director of Government Affairs , 8/1/2011
This month we reported on the new cell phone law in Nevada because our members spend so much time in their cars. Continuing with that theme for the August Vox Populi, we wanted to ask about the biggest challenge or frustration our members face while driving in Las Vegas.
For me, it's the people who leave a car length or more of space between them and the car in front of them at traffic lights. It causes at least three fewer cars to make it through the light, and it's like the person doesn't know that they aren't going to hit the car in front of them without leaving a ridiculous amount of space.
They're not moving. At all. There's no chance of a collision.
It. Makes. No. Sense.
What's the biggest challenge or frustration you face while driving in Las Vegas?

Ok , now you opened a huge can of worms !! First of all , I get so annoyed by people who get into the far right hand turn lane when they wanna go straight. Seriously , THERE ARE FOUR LANES TO THE LEFT OF YOU , use ONE. Mostly , I think people are so caught up in their own daily drama , they forget to be courteous to one another. I also love when people speed up when they see you turn on your signal to change lanes . Ive also seen people back up when they miss an exit ! Oh , heck no . I personally , would rather they were talking or texting , then some of these other behaviors. Im with you Joe .. It makes NO SENSE at all . But thats the narrative here , they have NO SENSE . Common sense is lacking , courteosy is lacking, its all about me , and Im gonna get their first and damn the rest of you . Sad , isn't it ? Ending on a positive note.. you should see the drivers in Vancouver BC. Makes Vegas look like a cake walk .

One reason for leaving a space (1/3 - 1/2 a car length) in front of you when you pull up behind a stopped car is so that if your vehicle is impacted by a driver from behind you, you lessen the chance of impacting the car in front of you (unless the idiot behind you was still traveling at a moderately high rate of speed). Another reason is so that you have the ability to change lanes without backing in case the vehicle in front of you becomes inoperative. Lord knows, if the driver behind you stopped on your bumper you wouldn't be able to back up. At least, that's what I was taught.
